21-02-2008: Lagoon 420 scoops the Mansura Perpetual Challenge Trophy
On 19th February 2008, the Mansura Perpetual Challenge Trophy was awarded to the Lagoon 420. The Mansura Trophy is the prize for the ecological design competition launched by the Royal Thames Yacht Club.
The trophy was awarded by the Duke of Edinburgh to Lagoon in recognition of it not only providing technical excellence and innovation but also as the 420 has proved itself in the commercial world – with over 70 being sold to this market over the last year.
Ancasta, Europe’s largest boat sales network, is the sole distributor in the UK and Ireland for Lagoon’s luxurious and innovative catamarans. The Lagoon 420 - launched in 2006, is equipped with electric motors as standard. Aside from reduced CO2 emissions and reduced engine maintenance, the 420 also utilises the turning motion of the propellers to recharge its batteries under sail.
Nick Griffith, Managing Director at Ancasta comments; ”Ancasta is delighted that Lagoon has been recognised for its ground breaking efforts towards designing and manufacturing an ecologically sound catamaran.”
The Mansura Perpetual Challenge Trophy recognises innovation in design, developments and operation of marine vessels with hybrid or all electric propulsion systems. In addition, the trophy highlights the use of sustainable power sources and publicises the ecological possibilities offered by hybrid propulsion in the marine environment. The Challenge is fully supported by the Royal Yachting Association and The Green Blue, an environmental awareness initiative by the British Marine Federation and the Royal Yachting Association.
The new trophy has been donated to the Royal Thames Yacht Club.
It is a striking bronze sculpture depicting tiller detail from the 1912 hybrid motor yacht, Mansura. The trophy has been commissioned and donated by Julian Delmar-Morgan, grandson of the yacht’s original owner; and David Barratt, with the intention that the engineering concepts represented by Mansura should be brought into the 21st. century while the world is seeking solutions to ecological challenges.
