Press Release
05-01-2007:Pains Wessex Supports Team Pink Ribbon at the Collins Stewart London Boat Show 2007 (AVAILABLE IN LONDON BOAT SHOW PRESS PACKS)
Team Pink Ribbon will be exhibiting at the Collins Stewart London Boat Show to raise awareness of breast cancer and of their sailing plans. To support the team, Pains Wessex is providing a range of safety equipment for two hardy adventurers who are booked to race in the AZAB Yacht Race from the UK to the Azores in July 2007.
The race is tough and will take Allan Owen and Roger Gale through the Western Approaches and across the Bay of Biscay to the Azores and back. Allan and Roger will be sailing their Jeanneau 35 Deux Points. They are entering the race in the hope of winning a prize, but primarily to raise lots of money for Breakthrough Breast Cancer, the Lingen Davies Cancer Relief Fund and Stepping Stones.
Pains Wessex has supplied an Offshore Kit for vessels sailing more than seven miles from land which includes four red handflares, four Para Red rockets and two Lifesmokes contained within a waterproof polybottle. Three Inshore Distress Kits have also been provided – these kits are designed for use when less than 5 miles from land to raise the alarm and pinpoint the position of the vessel. The kit includes two red handflares and two pinpoint orange handsmokes in a water resistant polybottle.
Allan and Roger are thrilled that Pains Wessex has joined their team and Allan said, “Carrying the correct safety equipment during the race is vital and as with all equipment of this type, very much hope that we will bring it back again unused! Our thanks to Pains Wessex for their kind donation.”
Team Pink Ribbon’s aim is to raise awareness of breast cancer, the scale of the disease and its effects. In the UK almost 41,000 women and 200 men are diagnosed with breast cancer each year and almost 1,000 women die from the disease each month. The inspiration behind the decision to raise money for these charities is Allan’s wife Mary and her close friend Shirley Scott. Shirley was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003. She fought her illness with determination and never complained about her situation or lost her infectious sense of humour. Shirley sadly passed away in November 2005. Mary first had breast cancer in 2000 at the age of 40 and again in February 2005. The diagnosis and the gruelling treatment she has received have been faced by her with courage and an upbeat attitude.
