Angus and Wafaei gained international recognition in 2006 for completing the first human-powered circumnavigation of the globe. The couple paddled, walked, skied and cycled from Vancouver through Alaska, Siberia and Europe; rowed across the Atlantic; and worked their way home through the Caribbean, Central America and the United States, covering nearly 26,000 miles in two years. At the end of 2006 they were named “Adventurers of the Year” by National Geographic Adventure.
“It’s fundamentally important to have the right apparel during extended expeditions,” says Angus. “Helly Hansen proved its worth to me during the circumnavigation in some of the coldest, toughest environments on the planet. Their support has been great and I’m excited to have them along with me on the next adventure.”
Angus and Wafaei are currently engaged in a North American speaking tour and are completing a documentary film. Both are individually writing books about the expedition, to be published in 2007. In spring 2008, they are planning to travel by rowing boat from Scotland to Syria. A labyrinth of canals and rivers connect the North Sea with the Mediterranean, and the team will trace a 5,500 km zigzagging route through 13 countries in their self-propelled vessels. More information on the couple’s pursuits is available on www.angusadventures.com .
“We’re thrilled to have Colin and Julie on the team for another two years”, says Helly Hansen’s Emma Russell. “They personify our brand, and their human powered expeditions raise public awareness of environmental issues - which Helly Hansen is very proud to support.”
Helly Hansen is celebrating its 130-year anniversary in 2007. It relies extensively on its athletes to test its products in the world’s harshest environments. The company has a history of supporting athletes and long-range expeditions from polar explorations to challenging mountain ascents.
