Garminís sailing features provide key data for the racing and cruising sailor
New software introduced by Garmin for its latest GPSMAP combination plotters and GPSMAP 8000 Multi Functional Displays now offer a range of useful features specifically designed for cruising and racing sailors.
In conjunction with Garmin’s new gWind™ transducers, which provide boaters with a choice of three different wind sensors including the highly accurate gWind Race and the gWind Wireless, this software update now gives sailors key information about the wind, tides and currents with tactical data on laylines and clear indications for when to tack or gybe displayed on the chart.
Easy to install, users are prompted by the startup wizard to configure the Garmin chartplotter for their specific sailing needs. This unlocks useful features such as automatic inclusion of laylines to a mark, and showing when to tack or gybe for optimum performance.
Data shown also includes the wind rose with both true and apparent wind simultaneously, using readings from the highly accurate gWind mast head sensors. Heading and course over ground are also shown at the same time, enabling users to see clearly the effect of tides and currents.
Other new features now included in Garmin’s Bluechart g2 and g2 Vision data include animated tides and currents. This enables users to easily plan routes by changing the time at a particular area on the chart, which will then clearly show the strength and direction of the tides at that hour. This feature is particularly useful when route planning to see the strength and direction of the tide.
To update software on fixed mounted products, Garmin users simply need to download the free software update bundle to a data card, which can be a standard SD™ card and card reader or a Garmin Data Card with Garmin Data Card reader, or contact Garmin Marine Customer Care on marinesupport.europe@garmin,com
