Pains Wessex is paving the way for the safe disposal of marine pyrotechnics

Pains Wessex, the UK leader of pyrotechnic marine rescue distress signals – part of the globally renowned, Wescom Group – announces it has received over 3,500 expired pyrotechnics in its recent flare amnesty days in collaboration with its UK leisure distributor, Lalizas – highlighting the need for a new standard of flare disposal in the UK.

The market-leading brand recently hosted a series of flare amnesty days in Penryn, Southampton and Poole. Leisure boaters were invited to safely and responsibly dispose of their out-of-date flares, as well as restocking vital safety equipment at a discounted price in return for their out-of-date pyrotechnics.

Those who attended the flare amnesty days were invited to make a charitable donation for their disposals. From the three events in 2022, 3,587 expired items were collected, with £2,263.93 being collected and donated to local charities.*

Pains Wessex is committed to improving standards across the industry, whilst saving lives at sea. Educating the public on the importance and proper use of flares improves safety and survival in emergency situations, while providing reliable disposal options and more sustainable packaging helps preserve the future of our seas.

Ally Ogg, Sales Executive, comments, “Our three events this year have been a great success. To safely dispose of so many items and raise so much for the charities has been a fantastic effort and much appreciated by those we are supporting. These amnesty days have also been a great opportunity to speak to, and help inform, boaters of the benefits of pyrotechnic flares to allow them to make an informed safety equipment decision and to purchase new kits on the day.”.

The brand has also developed a myth-busting animation, dispelling misinformation about flares derived from common, false information. Watch them here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_z6yXBChSM
