Somerset’s oldest and biggest attraction is proud to announce it has been awarded GOLD for its Wild Wookey caving experience, in the Active and Sporting Experience category in this year’s South West England Tourism Excellence Awards. The award ceremony took place on 6 February, amidst a stunning light show in Exeter Cathedral.
Recognised for providing truly memorable and immersive active and sporting activities for visitors to participate in, Wild Wookey was awarded this year’s Active and Sporting Experience Award. Wild Wookey fought off tough competition including that of Mill on the Brue Outdoor Activity Centre in Bruton and Go Skydive in Wiltshire.
Wild Wookey is loved for its adrenaline-fuelled, high-octane, exhilarating adventure caving experience in the largest and most spectacular cave complex in the UK. Venturing into the darkest recesses of Wookey Hole’s world-famous caves and guided by highly experienced instructors, Wild Wookey has adventurers immersed in a secret subterranean universe.
Daniel Medley, Managing Director at Wookey Hole, comments on the award win, saying, “We are thrilled to win yet another award for Wookey Hole! The Wild Wookey experience is like no other and popular among those that want to try something a little different. We are extremely proud of our team who work tirelessly to make sure every visitor has an experience like no other and leaves us with a huge smile on their face.”
This year’s awards saw a record 773 entries from the region including Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Bath, Bristol, Somerset, Dorset, Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
All entrants underwent a rigorous short-listing process with 559 being visited by a team of 50 mystery shoppers. Top performers in matching categories will now go on to be nominated for the national VisitEngland Awards, with the potential to become national winners in summer 2020.
Awards organiser, Robin Barker of Services for Tourism, said, “I never cease to be amazed by the innovation, dedication and imagination of our tourism businesses – not to mention their sheer hard work. It’s humbling to be part of this, and I’d like to add my congratulations to all the winners.”
Welcoming over half a million visitors each year, Wookey Hole is renowned for offering guests a unique and memorable experience throughout its historical caves and tours, seasonal events and 20 fantastic attractions within the venue. Its popular circus school also trains 100 young people, with many performing during weekends and school holidays.
