WesCom Signal and Rescue supports the Nuts Over The Atlantic crew as they take on the Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge 2017

Leading marine distress signal company, WesCom Signal and Rescue is supporting Nuts Over The Atlantic – a team of four friends from Bristol who plan to row across the Atlantic Ocean in aid of the Movember Foundation – by providing them with a selection of vital Pains Wessex marine distress signals.

The team, made up of Mark Gibson, Jon Lakin, and brothers, Steve Baker and Dan Baker, will set out from San Sebastian de La Gomera, Spain, on 12 December 2017.  Joining rowers from all over the world, they will row 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean to the Caribbean island of Antigua to complete the world’s toughest rowing challenge, the Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge.

In sponsorship of their epic Atlantic crossing, WesCom Signal and Rescue has provided the team with a full set of pyrotechnic flares and a large polybottle for safe storage. Pains Wessex flares have been helping to save lives for more than 100 years and are trusted for their reliability, high quality and consistent superiority by rescue services, navies, merchant ships and fishing fleets throughout the world.

Chris Feibusch, Global Head of Marketing for WesCom Signal and Rescue, says, “We wish all the Nuts Over The Atlantic guys every success in the Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge. The task ahead of them is monumental and it is our pleasure to support them and their cause, by providing them with the necessary equipment to ensure their safety and help facilitate their success.”

More people have been into space or climbed Mount Everest than have rowed across the Atlantic Ocean. The idea of this challenge came to Sir Chay Blyth whilst he and John Ridgeway were rowing the Atlantic Ocean in 1966. This was a journey in which the British duo endured 92 days of 50ft waves and a near starvation diet, but, with double the man power, this coxless four aim to complete the challenge in less than half the time, beating the current world record.

Aiming to inspire others to achieve challenges of their own and having all felt the devastating effects of cancer, Nuts Over The Atlantic have chosen to dedicate this particular challenge to raising money for The Movember Foundation. Their goal is to raise a total of £100,000 for the global charity committed to men living happier, healthier, longer lives.

Nuts Over The Atlantic captain, Mark Gibson, adds, “We are incredibly grateful for the support of WesCom Signal and Rescue. While, individually, we have climbed Kilimanjaro, cycled to Paris, competed in an Iron Man event and driven a Mototaxi across Peru, this is the challenge of our lives. It will push us to the limits, both mentally and physically, and once we leave the safety of the harbour at San Sebastian de La Gomera, we’ll be on our own on the vast ocean and at the mercy of the elements. Having these pyrotechnic flares on board will give us the confidence to face this ocean crossing head on, in order to raise as much money as possible for a great cause that is close to our hearts.”
